South West Region

Big Sugar Creek State Park (map)

In 1992, the opportunity arose to acquire 2,048 acres of

outstanding oak and oak-pine savannas in the rugged Elk Hills region

of South West Missouri.  These savannas, as well as glades,

woodlands and bluffs, lie along scenic Big Sugar Creek and are

being held for future development as a new state park.  There are

currently no public facilities available.

Pomme de Terre State Park (map)

Remnants of a pre-settlement savanna landscape with 200 year old

oak trees dot this park, which lies along the banks of the 7,800 acre

Pomme de Terre Reservoir.  The 734 acre park is geared for water

activities and boats and motors can be rented at the park marina.

Lake Pomme de Terre has hundreds of coves where solitude and

good catches of muskie and other fish can be combined.  The park

has two public beaches and two campgrounds.

Hermitage.

Prairie State Park (map)

The gently rolling, grass covered landscape is the state's largest

example of native prairie, which once covered more than one third

of Missouri.  The 3,500 acre park protects a variety of native

prairie grasses, flowers and distinctive prairie animals, including

prairie chickens and bison.  Picnicking, hiking, exploring the visitor

center and observing wildlife are featured here.  Limited camping

is available by contacting the park.

This park features the rugged and scenic terrain of the South West

Ranch

Ozarks.  More that 20 million gallons of water gush daily from

417-235-8682

Roaring River Spring to form the headwater of Roaring River.  In the

spring, a waterfall pours from the mountainside into the river.  The

stream is stocked daily during the March 1 to October 31 trout

season and provides excellent fishing for rainbow trout.  Much of

the 3,403 acre park has been preserved in its natural state,

although the site has a swimming pool, hiking trails, more than 200

campsites, rental cabins, a store for fishing and camping supplies

and a stable for horse rental, With a new lodge that offers visitors

lodging and dining in a beautiful setting that echoes the park's

rustic atmosphere.
