Big Oak Tree State Park (map)

Majestic trees tower above the rich delta stretching all around this

park and it is a National Landmark.  The 1,005 acre park get its name

from giant trees, a number of which have been identified as the

largest, or "champions," of their species.  A boardwalk through the

park allows visitors to get a close up view of the of this remnant of

the vast swamp forest that once covered Missouri's Bootheel.

Displays in the center interpret this vanishing landscape.  The park

is designed for day use and has a small lake for fishing.

Elephant Rocks State Park (map)

Giant granite rocks a billion years old stand end to end like a train of

red circus elephants in this 129 acre state park.  The first self

guiding Braille trail for the visually impaired in Missouri state parks

winds through the geologic wonder.  The gentle slopes of the paved

trail also make it accessible to elderly visitors.  Shaded picnic

grounds and a small fishing lake make the day use park fun for

family picnics and other activities.

One of Missouri's most beautiful and unspoiled landscapes, this park

is a superb example of the Eastern Ozark sandstone country.  The

4,953 acre park contains lush stands of native pines and hardwoods,

a generous understory of dogwood, redbud and wild azalea.  A 10

mile backpacking trail, Whispering Pine Trail, leads visitors through

pine forests and along Pickle Creek and the River Aux Vases.

Picnicking and camping accommodations are also available.

Johnson's Shut Ins State Park (map)

Swift waters of the Black River flowing around some of the oldest

exposed rocks in the nation have formed a series of canyon like

gorges or "shut ins" in this park.  The 8.470 acre park, which has

been left mostly as wilderness, contains more than 900 species

of plants.  It is a major trail head for the 500 mile long Ozark Trail,

which is under development.  The park contains picnic areas and a

campground.  Pets are not allowed ate the shut ins and access to the

park is limited, so there may be a wait to enter.  Contact the park.
