About
On May 14, 1804 in Saint Louis, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark commanded the “Corps of Discovery” to begin an expedition that would soon become famous for its commitment to the human tendency toward adventure, exploration, and curiosity. Two years later, upon their return to Saint Louis, Lewis and Clark were hailed in front-page headlines across the country. The first information about the trip, as well as the Lewis and Clark diaries, would be shipped out of Saint Louis over the coming years to spread the story of their journey. The most significant act of adventure and storytelling in the history of the country, the Lewis & Clark expedition began, ended, and retired itself in Saint Louis, Missouri.
Over the past several decades it has become apparent that the natural beauties of Missouri and the ‘mom-and-pop’ aspect of the culture of our society are undervalued by the modern way of living. People don’t know how many natural and cultural beauties pervade our state, and advertising is too expensive to allow good people to spread the word. For this reason, ShowMeOutdoors is founded upon the principle that preservation of the unique natural and cultural gems of Missouri can be achieved by leveling the informational playing field and putting the power of storytelling back in the hands of the adventurers.
In the year of 2000, ShowMeOutdoors was conceived with the hope that, given the immense amount of communicational freedom that has been established via the internet, storytelling could now be democratized: Every Man an Adventurer. Nine years later, this dream has been realized. New coding techniques, the spread of e-technology, and the shrinking expense of cameras have all created an environment in which an outdoors community has flourished. Every moment of every day, ShowMeOutdoors is created by adventurers, built by adventurers, and maintained by adventurers--powered by an interactive society getting together and sharing their experiences, stories, opinions, photos, and (most importantly) knowledge.
