Big Lake State Park (map)

The 625 acre natural oxbow Big Lake was formed ages ago from an

abandoned Missouri River channel.  The lake border the State Park,

which lies along a major migratory flyway. Surrounded by bottom-

land farms that lie along the Missouri River.  The 407 acre park

provides a scenic spot for fishing, bird watching, picnics, reunions,

and meeting.  The modern motel overlooking the lake has a private

reception area and comfortable overnight lodging.  The park has

camping facilities, a swimming pool and modern, kitchen equipped

rental cabins.  Many visitors use the park as a base for visits to

nearby Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge.

Crowder State Park (map)

The rolling hills of Northern Missouri serve as a scenic memorial

to Major General Enoch H Crowder, the Missourian who founded

the Selective Service System in 1917.  The 1,192 acre park 

includes a 20 acre stocked lake and several forest hiking trails, 

including one that leads to the Thompson River, which borders the 

park.  Visitors also may enjoy the lake's sand beach and the 

campground.  There is and organized group camp in the park,

 Camp Grand River.

Lewis and Clark State Park (map)

This State Park is dedicated to the explorers Meriwether Lewis and

William Clark, who visited the area on July 4, 1804 on their epic

westward journey.  Their journal notes the "great quantities of fish

and Gees & Gosling"  they saw here, and of a nearby abandoned

Kansa Indian village on the other side of the river.  Today the 121 

acre park has a shaded picnic area and shelter overlooking the

lake and a modern camping facilities.  The 365 acre lake offers

opportunities for fishing, swimming and boating.

Wallace State Park (map)

The terrain of Wallace State Park, more rugged than the

surrounding  rolling farmland of the North West Missouri Region is 

a favorite of bird watchers, nature lovers and anyone seeking a 

tranquil, restful environment.  Numerous hiking trails meander 

through the heavily wooded hills of the 502 acre park.  The 

peaceful camping area is particularly attractive to families and 

senior citizens, while a well developed youth camping area is 

popular with youth organizations.  The nearby Trice-Dedman 

Memorial Woods, owned by the Nature  Conservancy and cared for 

by the park staff is on of the best examples of pre-settlement 

forest in North West Missouri

Watkins Mill State Park (map)

The wooded hillsides that once provided timber and pastures 

for the Watkins farm now provide a scenic area for recreation.

The 818 acre park, which is adjacent to Watkins Mill features

a 100 acre lake for fishing, swimming, and boating.  It also has 

camping and picnicking areas, and a scenic, paved bicycling and

hiking trail that circles the lake.

Weston Bend State Park (map)

The 1,133 acre park features picnic tables and shelter houses, a

campground, a mile long pave bicycle trail and five miles of hiking

trail.  Fishing is available in the Missouri River.  Once noted for

producing rich crops of tobacco, the land now encompassed by

this park is adjacent to the Missouri River.  An easily accessible

overlook presents a majestic panorama of the River Valley.
