Big Lake State Park

The 625 acre natural oxbow
Big Lake was formed ages ago from an
|
|
|
|
abandoned Missouri River
channel. The lake border the State Park,
|
|
|
|
which lies along a major
migratory flyway. Surrounded by bottom-
|
|
|
|
land farms that lie along
the Missouri River. The 407 acre park
|
|
|
|
provides a scenic spot for
fishing, bird watching, picnics, reunions,
|
|
|
|
and meeting. The
modern motel overlooking the lake has a private
|
|
|
|
reception area and
comfortable overnight lodging. The park has
|
|
|
|
camping facilities, a
swimming pool and modern, kitchen equipped
|
|
|
|
rental cabins. Many
visitors use the park as a base for visits to
|
|
|
|
nearby Squaw Creek
National Wildlife Refuge.

Northern Missouri serve as a scenic memorial

to Major General Enoch H
Crowder, the Missourian who founded

|

the Selective Service
System in 1917. The 1,192 acre park

|
|
includes
a 20 acre stocked lake and
several forest hiking trails,
|
|
|
including
one that leads to the
Thompson River, which borders the
|
|
|
park.
Visitors also may enjoy
the lake's sand beach and the
|
|
|
campground.
There is and organized
group camp in the park,
|
|
|
Camp Grand River.

This State Park is
dedicated to the explorers Meriwether Lewis and

William Clark, who visited
the area on July 4, 1804 on their epic

westward journey.
Their journal notes the "great quantities of fish

|

|
and Gees &
Gosling" they saw here, and of a nearby abandoned
|
|
|
|
Kansa Indian village on
the other side of the river. Today the 121
|
|
|
|
acre park has a shaded picnic
area and shelter overlooking the
|
|
|
|
lake and a modern camping
facilities. The 365 acre lake offers
|
|
|
|
opportunities for fishing,
swimming and boating.
