Castlewood State Park (map)

The Meramec River flows through this park making it popular for

canoeing and fishing.  The 1,179 acre park which features majestic

white limestone bluffs towering above the river, is well suited for

day use activities such as picnicking, hiking and nature study.

Located in St. Louis County and a little tricky to find.

Cuivre River State Park (map)

Cuivre River State Park encompasses much of the rugged, wooded

terrain that surrounds Big Sugar Creek in the Southern Lincoln 

Hills.  The 6,393 acre park includes a 55 acre lake and more than 

38 miles of hiking trails.  Horseback riding is allowed on 19 miles of 

the trails and a campground is provided for the riders.  In addition

to extensive hardwood forests, the visitors may enjoy several areas

where native prairies are being restored.  There is a visitor center

with exhibits that illustrate the cultural and natural history of the

park.  Three group camps are located in the park and are available 

for rental by organized groups.

This park is a richly wooded 2,439 acre park in the rugged Missouri

River hills.  Located on the edge of St. Louis, the park include

campgrounds, a swimming pool, wide lanes for bike riding, horse-

back riding rentals and trails, a tennis court and a visitor center

with exhibits.  The Jacob L. Babler Outdoor Education Center is

designed to accommodate campers with special needs.

Graham Cave State Park (map)

This park was a site of very early human occupation, is a National

Historic Landmark and the principal feature of the 357 acre park. 

Radiocarbon dating has shown the cave was inhabited as far back 

as 10,000 years ago.  Special features of the park are its glades, 

savannas and sandstone bluffs with over hangs and wet season 

waterfalls.  The park, which borders the Loutre River, offers picnic 

areas with play grounds, a campground and scenic hiking trails.  

An administrative building contains both the park office and a 

small museum with exhibits describing the area's prehistoric 

occupation.  Additional exhibits are located in a kiosk on the trail 

leading to and at the cave.

Meramec State Park (map)

Several mile of picturesque riverbank scenery are preserved in this

6,896 acre park, providing a haven for river recreation.  The park's

campgrounds borders the spring fed Meramec River.  Hidden 

within the park's expanse of forest are several springs and more 

than 40 caves. You can join Naturalist lead tours through Fisher 

Cave for a fee.  The park contains a dining lodge, a general store, 

canoe rentals, rental cabins, a visitor center, a motel and 

conference center.  You'll also find Meramec Caverns close by.
