Breath In the pristine wildlife and widely-rumored wonders of Missouri, the state with the most respected conservation in the Union. Missouri tourism has something for everyone, and, while you’ll probably be surprised in what you discover here, you won’t be disappointed. Fishermen and boaters are widely familiar with our many lakes, including Lake of the Ozarks, the largest man-made recreational lake in the U.S., as well as the 200 species of fish that inhabit them. Campers should have heard of the vast Mark-Twain National Forest lands, which encompass over 1.5 million acres of ancient, Ozark Highland landscape. Canoeists have certainly eyed the many scenic tributaries of the Mississippi, Missouri, Meramec, and Current that crisscross the state. Along with its numerous unique natural features, Missouri boasts an impressive urban atmosphere. Two great sports towns, the home of blues and jazz, the barbecue capital of the world, and Soulard, the best Mardi Gras destination next to New Orleans all inhabit the state. Everyone from New York to New Guinea has seen pictures of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the hundreds of city fountains and wide boulevards of Kansas City, nicknamed the ‘Paris of the Plains.’ Moreover, Missouri harbors Branson, the entertainment capital of the world with more theater seats than Broadway. All of these priceless features of Missouri culminate in the deep value that Missourians place on their resources, both man-made and natural. Perhaps one Missouri governor said it best for all of us: “a healthy Missouri outdoors is essential to life.”
While we hope that you indeed discover much more about these popular destinations, ShowMeOutdoors also aims to provide a view of Missouri’s often overlooked resources. Inside you’ll find: Johnson's Shut-Ins, exhilarating volcanic relic, gurgling with the waters of the swift Black River pushing through ancient-black igneous rocks; the rolling greens of Missouri golfing which have led many to call Missouri the ‘golf Mecca of the Midwest’; thousands of scintillating caves hidden deep within the grounds of ‘the Cave State’; and historic and cultural gems such as The Hill, the Landing, and the friendly and fashionable neighborhood of downtown Springfield.
Discover the most comprehensive, descriptive compendium of outdoors information on the web. Every moment of every day, ShowMeOutdoors is created by adventurers, built by adventurers, and maintained by adventurers--powered by an interactive society getting together and sharing their experiences, stories, opinions, photos, and (most importantly) knowledge. To us Missourians, our state means much more than tourism. ShowMeOutdoors and their fellow Missourians hope to reflect the true beauty of Missouri, both man-made and natural, by putting the power of storytelling back in the hands of the explorers.
